PhD Student: Jorge Fallas

In brief

After gaining a Bachelor of Arts (Economics) from the University of Costa Rica, I became an economic advisor at the Ministry of Planning and Economic Policy of Costa Rica. I won an Advanced Training in Economics (ATIE) Scholarship to undertake post graduate studies at the Catholic University of Chile, where I obtained a Master of Science (Social Evaluation of Projects), a Master of Science (Financial Economics) and a Diploma in Applied Macroeconomics. I have been a part-time professor at both the Catholic University of Chile and the Andres Bello University, Santiago. I have also worked in banking as a financial analyst and market analyst.

My PhD

My thesis topic is being finalised but I anticipate it will focus on either the maturity structure of debt or rights issues. For the former, I would examine how a company’s distribution of debt into short term and long term could give information to outside investors about the reliability of the firm. My rights issues research involves compiling a database that would enable us to examine a range of factors, such as the impact of rights issues of the price of the share over time. This type of database analysis for rights issues would be new for the Australian sharemarket and could have applications for both the market and regulatory authorities.

Preferred professional directions

My priority is to continue to do original research that is innovative and has practical applications so I aim to  develop my academic career.
