PhD Student: Kerry Zhenhua Liu
In brief
I earned a Bachelor of Science (Mechanics) and Master of Philosophy (Economics) from Tongji University, Shanghai. I became an investment analyst in Shanghai and my responsibilities included mergers & acquisition analysis, corporate restructuring, valuation (DCF and real option models) and other topics related to financial markets.
My PhD
My professional experience as an investment analyst and my theoretical training underlay my thesis entitled: ‘Large shareholders, private benefits of control and minority investors’ interests’. In global finance markets, especially in Asia, the role of large shareholders is highly controversial in particular with respect to the control they exercise and the potential exploitation of small shareholders. My thesis will argue that private benefits enjoyed only by large shareholders are not necessarily harmful to small shareholders. The thesis also includes cutting-edge research on the role of Sovereign Wealth Funds. As well as contributing to academic knowledge, my thesis will prove useful to both regulators and practitioners.
Preferred professional directions
I am interested in contributing to society through research and analysis for regulatory bodies such as ASIC, ACCC and RBA and international financial institutions such as the World Bank and IMF.
