Faculty of Economics and Commerce Department of Finance

PhD Student: Mahmoud Fayez Agha

In brief

I qualified as a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®) in 2003 and I am a member in the CFA® Institute, USA. I hold a Bachelor degree in Banking and Finance from Yarmouk University, Irbid-Jordan. I have tutored in the University of Melbourne’s Department of Finance and since September 2006, lectured in the CFA review programs arranged by the CFA Society of Melbourne. Previous professional roles have included Financial Consultant at BDO International Accountants, Kuwait.

My PhD

My thesis is on ’Investment, Dividends, Firm Performance and Managerial Incentives: Another Insight into the Value of Corporate Governance’. A model called the ‘Tradeoff Model’ has been developed to capture the relationships among all these variables, followed by an empirical analysis to test the model’s predictions. The model and the empirical results are very promising in explaining many controversial topics in finance literature including: the over-investment and under-investment problem; the over-payment and under-payment of dividends problem; and the roles and impacts of corporate governance and incentives on investment, dividends and firm performance. It is a significant contribution that this one model captures these inter-related issues, where previously they had been considered in isolation. Potentially, the Tradeoff Model could be applicable to all commercial firms.

Preferred career directions

I would prefer to combine academic and industry roles, perhaps by lecturing at a university while working for a consulting company, possibly in investment banking or portfolio management.
