PhD Student: Wei Zhang
In brief
I have had a strong interest in finance since I did my Bachelor of Commerce at The University of Melbourne, where I also did my Honours in Finance. I have also enjoyed tutoring finance subjects, including Investments and Derivative Securities. My research interest is in the area of corporate risk management and global currency hedging. I am also interested in analysts’ forecasts and stock returns, as well as corporate bond ratings.
My PhD
My PhD focuses on currency hedging by examining how to use currencies to hedge the risks associated with international portfolio diversification. My research is especially applicable to fund managers, but also benefits individual investors in informing them how to reduce risk when holding a portfolio of international assets. I have also extended my Honours research in analysts’ forecasts and stock returns. I used analysts’ forecasts as a proxy for divergence of opinion, that is, if the market is efficient and there is short-term constraint we should see an active relation between analyst forecast dispersion and stock returns.
Preferred professional directions
I would very much enjoy developing an academic career but would also be seeking opportunities to gain experience in industry.
