Austin Chia
Bachelor of Commerce 2006

Career Overview

I am currently employed as a Consultant within the Risk Advisory Services division at Ernst & Young. Working within a leading global professional services firm like EY, I am exposed to a diverse range of client across various industries, ensuring I am continuously engaged and challenged.

My work is primarily focussed on working with companies to help them effectively manage risk while executing strategies to increase value. Clients that I have worked on include Coles Group Ltd, Department of Human Services, Automatic Data Processing, Healthscope and Rio Tinto Ltd.

Study Advice

The University of Melbourne has provided me with opportunities and experiences that have far surpassed my expectations from when I first commenced my degree. The subjects offered by the Faculty of Economics & Commerce strike a balance between theory and practical application and have undoubtedly paved a pathway for me to pursue a professional career of choice. 


Michelle di Fabio
Bachelor of Commerce/ Bachelor of Information Systems, 2006

What is your current role, and what you enjoy about it?

I currently work as an Accountant in Private Client Services at PricewaterhouseCoopers. I work with clients who are entrepreneurs, companies which are high growth/ emerging markets and wealthy individuals. My work spans across Assurance, Tax and Advisory Services and comprises of a client base across multiple industry groups.

As my work is varied, I am continuously challenged and being exposed to different industries and businesses with diverse organisational structures. It also gives me the opportunity to work closely with team members and the client, where I can learn as much as possible from my experiences and the resources surrounding me.

What did you enjoy about the course?

I enjoyed the diversity of study in Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Information Systems. Studying different disciplines offered me greater depth and flexibility and exposed me to a broad range of concepts and job prospects across the business, management and IT sectors.

I will reflect on my time at the University of Melbourne as the most fulfilling and exciting time of my life.


Brendan Barratt
Master of Applied Finance 2001

Career overview

I am currently employed as a manager in both Consulting and the Corporate Advisory division at William Buck. I have recently worked on developing a small winery with a friend, scoping out the project, identifying relevant cash flows and assessing the reasonableness of the investment.

Study advice

The main advantage of doing the Master of Applied Finance (MAF) is the broader range options that I now have with regard to my career. The skills gained in the MAF have enabled me to approach all sorts of problems.

Career overview

I am currently pursuing a Doctorate of Economics at Oxford University. It is my long term ambition to become involved in government economic and financial policy in the context of globalisation.

Study advice

My time at the University of Melbourne was incredible. I was exposed to so many different opportunities that have had a tremendous influence on me. My honours year was easily the most rewarding year of my university study, as not only did it give me the chance to gain a greater understanding of finance, but also I made so many great friends who share my interests.


Jenny Chu
Bachelor of Commerce/Laws (combined degrees)

Career overview

I am an analyst in investment banking at UBS. I work with senior bankers developing business solutions and potential acquisition opportunities for our clients. I am often involved in coordinating and structuring transactions, conducting valuing and financial effects analysis and marketing the client’s investment case.


Study advice

If there was any advice that I would give to current students, I would encourage them to visit the University Careers Resource Centre – there is a wealth of information there that can inspire you.
