Master of Financial Management (MFM)
The Master of Financial Management provides training for a position in the finance industry and emphasises skills that are marketable to potential employers. No work experience is required for admission.
Course aims
Graduates should have the capacity to work in professional practice by applying the specialist financial knowledge the course provides. In particular, the course aims to provide graduates with:
- Extensive applications of finance theory
- Detailed knowledge of the operations and activities of financial markets
- A practical and career oriented program
- An understanding of financial management principles and their application to corporate finance policy
- A comprehensive understanding of Australian and international financial markets
- A comprehensive knowledge of derivative assets and the operation of the markets in these assets
- An applied knowledge of various specialised aspects of the finance industry
Program structure
The Master of Financial Management can be completed in two years of full-time study or over four years part-time study.
Full-time study - structure
The degree is completed in two years of full-time study. It requires completion of 200 points. The first year has five core subjects of 12.5 points each and three elective subjects (worth 37.5 points in total). The second 100 points of the program comprises six core subjects of 12.5 points each and two elective subjects (worth 25 points in total).

- 306-660 Accounting for Decision Making, or 306-610 Financial Statement Analysis
Three elective subjects selected from:
- 333-635 Public Sector Financial Management
- 333-811 Treasury Management
- 333-815 Fundamentals of Portfolio Management
- 333-819 Project Finance
- 333-820 Property Investment Development Finance
Other fourth year (level 4), Masters (level 6) or diploma (level 8) subjects approved by the program’s Academic Co-Directors.
Important note:
Up to two subjects can be chosen from third year
(level 3) subjects offered by the Faculty. If 333-301
Investments and 333-302 Corporate Finance, or
equivalent subjects, have not previously been taken,
these must be included in the course of study (and
preferably taken in the first semester).
No more than 25
points can be chosen from third year (level 3) subjects,
and are subject to the approval of the Academic Director
of the Program.

Marketing Management or other fourth year (level 4), Masters (level 6) or diploma (level 8) subjects approved by the Academic Director of the program, including Master of Applied Commerce subjects and the 6.25-point electives from the Master of Applied Finance Program.

Important note: No more than 25 points of subjects at fourth year (level 4), or diploma (level 8) can be included in the second year of the degree – with one exception. In the case of students who have entered the Postgraduate Diploma in Finance or Master of Financial Management as midyear students and have taken 333-630 Fixed Interest and Options Markets or 333-618 Advanced Derivative Securities as part of the Diploma before 2004 or 333-309 Derivative Securities from 2005, inclusion of an additional 12.5 points of fourth year (level 4) or Postgraduate Diploma (level 8) subjects in the Master of Financial Management may be permitted. Students who include a Winter semester sub ject as one of their fi nal subjects in the Master of Financial Management course may not be eligible to graduate from the program until after results are released in December of the same year.
Assessment
Students must pass all sixteen subjects to qualify for the Master of Financial Management: 100 points in the first year and 100 points in the second year.
Methodology
- The method of instruction may vary between subjects.
- The class normally begins with a period of formal instruction, which is followed by small working groups analysing and discussing the study materials.
- The lecturer acts as discussion facilitator and leader.
- Students are required to read materials prior to attending class.
- Active participation in class discussion and in-group work is expected as it forms an integral part of teaching and learning.
- The subjects are assessed by a combination of class work, assignments and examinations.
Admission criteria
The minimum entry requirement is an undergraduate degree of good academic standard with some studies in finance (or its equivalent) which indicates an ability to complete the Master of Financial Management.
Admissions to the MFM are managed by the Faculty of Economics and Commerce.
